Meshtastic Defaults

Meshtastic — Edmonton defaults

Meshtastic is the larger global mesh ecosystem, but YEG community activity is concentrated on MeshCore. These defaults are here for operators who run Meshtastic alongside MeshCore. Always verify against the project docs for your firmware version.

Roles

RoleUse it when
CLIENT (default)Selectively rebroadcasts messages according to the routing algorithm. Used for handhelds, mobile nodes. You probably want this one.
CLIENT_MUTEReceives messages, but never rebroadcasts. Better on battery, recommended if you're usually near another CLIENT.
CLIENT_BASESame as CLIENT, but prioritizes rebroadcasting favorited nodes. Good for a fixed-position home base.
ROUTERReserved almost exclusively for mountaintop nodes with exceptional reach. Always rebroadcasts all packets immediately. Not applicable to YEG, please use CLIENT or CLIENT_BASE instead.
REPEATERA router that's hidden from the node list. Deprecated role, do not use!

Avoid the ROUTER role. It hurts more than it helps, and can create a black hole for packets. The regular CLIENT or CLIENT_BASE role is more than good enough, and still contributes to the mesh!
